One day, many many years ago, a group of people are attempting to conjure a good metaphor for death.
After a short time with everyone pondering what a metaphor even is, one suggests the image of a man reaping a field of grain. It is roundly accepted as being apt…but not enough…
So someone else says, “what if it isn’t a man, what if it’s a skeleton?”
Almost as soon as this is said, another adds “yeah, a skeleton in a scary black robe with a big hood!”
Everybody sitting there at the table (because it’s a sales meeting, after all) says, “oooooooo that’s good.”
So is born one of the most pervasive of cross-cultural icons.
Personally I always imagined the personification of Death as something of an asshole.
